Les six degrés de liberté permettent de mesurer tout objet en mouvement dans le monde: 3 par translation, 3 par rotation.
La vidéo est ponctuée d'entretiens avec Anne Sophie Sayeux, anthropologue du surf, des ingénieurs du Bassin des Carènes à Centrale Nantes, et Frédéric Soulard, musicien, compositeur et producteur. Les vidéos ont été tournées au Bassin des Carènes, sur des plages des Landes et du North Devon, ou capturées à l'écran via des webcams de spots de surf, ou sur mon écran en explorant des photographies d'états de mer. Ensemble, les protagonistes nous racontent comment chacun d'entre eux perçoit et entend les vagues, et ce qu'elles racontent de nous.

The six degrees of freedom are a way of measuring any three-dimensional object moving in space: 3 by translation, 3 by rotation.
The video is punctuated by interviews with surfing anthropologist Anne Sophie Sayeux, engineers from the bassin des carènes, and musician, composer and producer Frédéric Soulard. The videos were shot at the bassin des carènes at Centrale Nantes, on beaches in the Landes region of France and in North Devon, or captured on screen via webcams of surf spots, or on my screen by exploring photographs of sea states. Together they tell us how each of us perceives and hears the waves, and what they tell us about ourselves.

J’ai rencontré Pilou Ducalme, surfeur de grosses vagues respecté de la côte Basque, afin d’échanger sur sa manière d’affronter les vagues géantes.
De nos échanges est né «Avalanche», objet visuel et immersif qui explore les liens entre corps et océan.
«Avalanche» est une interprétation en miroir des liens qui se créent entre les moyens physiques et la disponibilité mentale permettant d’aller au devant des vagues géantes, et les moyens que l’on développe afin d’aller à la rencontre de l’autre. S’exposer, aller au-delà de soi, plonger dans l’inconnu tout en se protégeant, car quoi de plus étrange qu’un-e autre que soi.

I met up with Pilou Ducalme, a respected big-wave surfer from the Basque coast, to ask him about his way to approach giant waves. “Avalanche”, an immersive visual object that explores the links between body and ocean, was born out of our discussions.
‘Avalanche’ works as a mirror-image interpretation of the links that are created between the physical means and mental availability that enable him to tackle the giant waves, and the means we develop to meet others. Exposing yourself, going beyond yourself, diving into the unknown while protecting yourself, because what could be stranger than someone other than yourself ?
